Clinton Woodrow Bratton Jr.'s Obituary
Clinton “Clint” Woodrow Bratton, Jr., a child of God, died on September 2, 2023, at the age of 81. He was born in Memphis, TN on May 13, 1942 and graduated from Central High School in Memphis in 1960. Clint earned his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English from Mississippi State University in 1964 while serving as the captain of the G.E. College Bowl team. He received the prestigious Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and attended Northwestern University earning a Master's in English Literature. He then received a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado and went on to teach English / Literature at the University of Northern Colorado and Memphis State University. Eventually, he changed careers and retired from the medical field. Clint was literate in French and German and taught himself Spanish after retirement.
Clint adored his family and was kind to all people as he learned from his Savior whom he loved to worship through the liturgy of the Episcopal Church. Most people who knew Clint probably do not realize what a multi-talented man he was. Baking bread and pies, making homemade wine, needlepointing, and carrying on the tradition of the Bratton Christmas fruitcake were ways that he used his creativity. He also loved to play tennis, hike, fish, fence, listen to opera, read any type of book, and solve the New York Times’ crossword puzzle. Everyone will remember his soft smile, bright blue eyes, distinct white hair, and his unbelievably patient and kind nature.
Clint is survived by the love of his life and devoted wife of 60 years, Judy Neumann Bratton, children Randy Bratton (Tricia) of Memphis, TN and Alicia Bigger (Chris Maes) of Rio Rancho, NM, and his joy-inducing grandchildren, Anna and Jackson Bigger and Ginny and Sarah Bratton. He also leaves his sister Norma Cowell of Fort Collins, CO and brothers Ray Bratton of Memphis, TN and Mike Bratton (Vicki) of White Pine, TN. Clint was preceded in death by his parents Bessie Mae and Clinton Woodrow Bratton, Sr.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, September 16 at St. George’s Episcopal Church (2425 S Germantown Rd, Germantown, TN 38138), and the family will receive friends at a reception afterwards. A private burial will take place that afternoon in Longtown, MS.
