Christine Hambric Garrett's Obituary
Christine Hambric Garrett went to be with her Lord on December 25, 2025. Chris was born in Thomaston, Georgia, on January 18, 1928, weighing just 2.7 pounds. In the days before neonatal intensive care, she had to be strong to survive, and she persisted and thrived. She was the first in her family to go to college, attending Emory University School of Nursing, where she met Ed Garrett, a medical school student. They married in 1952 and moved to Nashville, where she briefly taught nursing at Vanderbilt University before moving to Houston, Texas, where her husband worked at Baylor College of Medicine. Later, after moving to Memphis, Tennessee, she pursued her Master's in guidance and counseling and her Doctorate in educational leadership at the University of Memphis. She served as the Assistant Dean of Students at the University of Tennessee Nursing School for ten years. Later, she worked in real estate with Coleman-Etter Fontaine Realtors.
Chris was engaged in many volunteer activities and often served as president of the organization. She also loved to study and play bridge. She enjoyed her home and collecting antiques. In her later years, she enjoyed oil painting. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Le Bonheur, Antiquarians, Tuesday Study Club, and the Memphis Country Club. She served as President of Christ United Methodist Women of the Church, and she served on the board of St. Mary’s Episcopal School.
Chris was preceded in death by her daughter, Anne Westmoreland Garrett (1979), husband Harvey Edward Garrett (1996), second husband Robert Fallis (2012), father Walter Lee Hambric (1955), mother Nellie Mae Moore (2001), and brother Harvey Hambric (2003).
She leaves behind three children, Harvey Edward Garrett, Jr. (Rose), Cristen Garrett Haslam (Bill), and Samuel Jonathan Garrett (Heather) and her sister Ann Hambric Rogers. Her grandchildren include Katherine Garrett Harris (Stuart), Andrew Edward Garrett (Ruth), Cristen Garrett Cain (Ryan), William Edward Haslam (Hannah), Annie Haslam Colquitt (David), Leigh Haslam Avery (Matt), Jonathan Westmoreland Garrett (Amber), and Edward Pendleton Gaines Garrett (Jane). She also leaves behind 21 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of Second Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 12:00 noon with a visitation at 11:00 A.M. in the Salmon room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing, 874 Union Avenue, Memphis, TN 38103.
