Christine Doxey's Obituary
Ruby Christine M. Doxey, 88 of Memphis passed away July 9, 2010 at Baptist Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 5, 1922 in Hornsby, TN. Mrs. Doxey was a retiree of the United States Postal Service. Mrs. Doxey was preceded in death by her husband Walter R. Doxey, parents James M. and Maude Lou Murley and four sisters Maye, Eva, Irene, and Stella. A graduate of Humes High School, attended Miller Hawkins Business School and Memphis State University. In her early career Mrs. Doxey modeled for major department stores and sung with Big Bands at the Peabody Skyway. Mrs. Doxey along with her husband Walter owned Doxey’s Saveway Food Store on Watkins for 10 years before going to work for Ace Fixtures. In 1964 Mrs. Doxey went to work for the United Postal Service in Memphis, holding several different positions with the Postal Service over the course of her career, working her way up to several firsts for women in Government. Mrs. Doxey was the female Post Mistress in Memphis at the Bartlett Post Office, then going on to the Arlington Post Office where she retired in 1998. While employed with the Postal Service Mrs. Doxey was chosen to represent the Post Office as Ms. Air Mail Field and Ms. Zip, traveling all over the mid-south educating various post offices and citizens the many uses of the Air Mail Field and Zip codes. Mrs. Doxey had a full life of activity in politics serving on several different political campaigns over the past 40 year span along with her husband. She has served on the board for the Parkway Village Business and Professional Women’s Club, treasure of the Greater Memphis State Alumni Organization, President of the Millington Navy League, as well as The National Alzheimer Association, Heart Association, National Kidney Foundation, National Epileptic Foundation, and the first female President for the Irish Society of Memphis, to name a few. She gave her time to several charitable organizations in way of volunteering, such as St. Peter’s Orphanage, also volunteering at the Mid-South Fairs, phone volunteer for WKNO-TV for several years. Recipient of outstanding Woman of the year in Government, State Roving trophy Civic Accomplishment award, recipient of Woman of the Year in Business and Professional Careers, her most recent accomplishment was being inducted into the Hall of Fame at Signature Healthcare where she resided. Mrs. Doxey is survived by her daughter Jackie L. Allensworth of Bartlett, two granddaughters, Tori C. Hill (husband Carl Hill) of Bartlett, and Kelley Fisher of Smyrna, Tn. Three Great Grand-children, Patrick, Shawna and Lindsey Hill of Bartlett, and one adopted Great Grand-daughter April Brock (husband Andre Brock) and three Great-Great Grand-children Mason, Taylor, and Little Dre, A special niece Sue McIntyre (husband Dick) along with several other nieces and nephews as well as a host of good friends. The services will be entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home on Poplar Ave., visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, July 11, at Memorial Park Funeral Home with the funeral service to be held 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 12 also at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
