Chong Soo Pyun's Obituary
Dr. Chong Soo Pyun, PhD, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by loving family. He led a remarkable life, full of professional accomplishments, personal success and community service. Dr. Pyun was born in 1933 in Seoul, Korea. An avid student of English, he served as a translator and army captain during the Korean War. After earning his master’s degree at the Miami University in Ohio and his doctorate from the University of Georgia, he was a distinguished professor of international finance at the University of Memphis for 46 years. Additionally, he lectured internationally and consulted for Regions Bank. He was the president of the Korean-American Economic Association of North America, as well as an advisor to the Korean government. Dr. Pyun helped establish the Korean Associations in both Atlanta and Memphis, promoting local businesses and Korean culture. Governor Don Sundquist recognized his work with the Tennessee Outstanding Achievement Award. His personal life was equally full. With his devoted wife of 52 years, he traveled the world, recently visiting Dubai and Chile. He regularly pursued the game of golf with close friends. Dr Pyun is survived by two brothers, one sister, two children, three grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. A funeral service will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home, to celebrate his life.
