Cheryl Rumage Estes' Obituary
Cheryl Rumage Estes, 65, died July 15, 2023 at her home after a brief illness. A memorial service will be held Saturday July 22, 2023 at 3:00pm at Memphis Memorial Park, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee with internment following at Memphis Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 that same day.
Cheryl was born October 16, 1957 in Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of Floyd Rumage and her late mother Lynn Rumage, Germantown, Tennessee.
Cheryl attended Germantown High School and was very active in theater, sports and was on the High School Cheerleading Squad for four years. After graduation she attended Memphis State University and graduated with her degree in law.
Cheryl was always very passionate about her law degree. She was once ask if she could change careers, what she would choose. Her response was to be the Commissioner of Baseball. She always totally supported the University of Memphis Tigers, Memphis Redbirds and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Cheryl was an achiever, always giving priority to whatever she was doing. Cheryl received her BA from the University of Memphis in 1979, University of Memphis Law School, JD 1982. She was Managing Editor of University of Memphis Law Review. She was a partner with Lewis and Thomason in Memphis, Member of the Shelby County Bar Association, Fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation, Named to The Best Lawyers in America Employment Law Management, past member of Junior League of Memphis, and Past Board Member of the Board of Directors for Playhouse on the Square.
Cheryl was an active member of Germantown Baptist Church for 58 years where she and her late husband (Jack) taught Sunday School for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lynn Rumage and her husband, Jack Estes,II. She is survived by her two sons Jack Estes, III and his wife Whitney, and Andrew Estes of Memphis, Tennessee, father, Floyd Rumage of Germantown, sister Pamela Rumage of Memphis, Grandson Charles Estes of Memphis. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dr. Virginia Gardner (Rev. Tupper Gardner) of Roanoke, Va. She also wanted remembrances given to her best friends and neighbors, Mary and Howard Davis.
Pallbearers: Chris Vescovo, Steve Vescovo, Al Harvey, Chuck Cagle, Marty Regan, Howard Davis, Justin Joy, Russel Riley, and Steve Barton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in "Honor of Cheryl Rumage Estes."
