Charles E Stewart's Obituary
Rev. Charles E. Stewart, Pastor Emeritus of Colonial Park United Methodist Church, died Friday, February 26th, at Kirby Pines Nursing Home in Memphis, Tenn. Rev. Stewart, age 93, was born in New Albany, Miss., September 9, 1922, the son of Rev. James V. and Elizabeth Stewart. In 1938, Charles’ father was assigned to minister the First Methodist Church of Sherman, Miss. It was in Sherman that Charles met the love of his life, Marjorie Elaine Scruggs. They were married on June 10, 1943, and were together until Marjorie’s death in 2011. Rev. Stewart graduated from Lambuth College in Jackson, Tenn. and received his seminary training from Emory University. He joined the Memphis Conference of the United Methodist Church and was ordained in 1946. Rev. Stewart served churches in West Tenn. and Western Kentucky for 45 years. He was pastor of 5 large United Methodist Churches in Memphis, including: Parkway, Colonial Park, Highland Heights, Schoolfield, and Mullins UMC, retiring from the Mullins congregation in 1987. He served as Vice-President and Director of Scholarship for the Memphis Conference Board of Ministerial Training, Chairman of the Board of Christian Vocations and was a member of the conference Finance Commission, Board of Pensions and Board of Education. Rev. Stewart served as President of the Memphis Downtown Optimist Club and was also a member of the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs. Civitans presented him with the International Foundation Fellowship Award for Meritous Achievement. Rev. Stewart is survived by his son, Charles E. Stewart, Jr. (Chuck) and his wife, Mary, granddaughters Angela E. Stewart Forester (Burk) and Diana C. Stewart Nicholas (Justin), great-granddaughter, Elaina C. Nicholas and great-grandson, Hudson R. Nicholas. Visitation will be Monday, February 29th, 11:30am followed by funeral service at 1:00 pm, at Colonial Park United Methodist Church, 5330 Park Ave., Memphis, with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery on Poplar Ave. Family requests that any memorials be sent to Colonial Park UMC, Memphis, Tenn., 38119.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119. “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”
