Charles Stancil passed away August 23, 2016. Charles Gordon Stancil, 95, passed away August 23, 2016. He was born in Clarksdale, MS on July 1, 1921, son of Wilburn Seth and Edna Gordon Stancil. In his childhood, Gordon was an avid stamp collector and participant in Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout with two Palms. He graduated from Clarksdale High School and Bowling Green Business University. His studies were interrupted by three years of service in the U.S. Marines during WWII, serving as Master Sargent on a ship in the South Pacific. After successfully completing the Tennessee CPA exam, he was hired by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Memphis to establish a modern accounting system for the Memphis plant and its seven subsidiaries. Desiring more education, he graduated from the Southern Law School (University of Memphis) and succeeded in passing the Tennessee Bar exam. Gordon served 40 years as Secretary – Treasurer (CFO) of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Memphis. In his retirement years, he enjoyed playing golf, following Ole Miss football, traveling, and fine foods. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Larry King and great grandson, Eli Cowan. He is survived by his wife, Mattie Ruth Stancil; children, Martha King of Germantown, Bill Stancil (Pat) of Kansas City, MO, Becky Dewease (Steve) of Germantown, Carol Harrell (Mike) of Cordova, and Brett Stancil (Ina) of Hernando, MS; stepchildren, Steve Williford (Emily) of Memphis and Greg Williford (Diana) of Bradenton, FL; six grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and six step great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until his service begins at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, August 27 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broadway Baptist Church, 7400 New Getwell Road, Southaven, MS 38672. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Celebrating Life Behind the Stone Wall”.
