Charles Adolphus Montague, Jr.'s Obituary
Charles Adolphus Montague, Jr., son of Charles Adolphus and Annie Mae Durham Montague, passed away on June 26, 2020 at The Village at Germantown with his family by his side.
Charlie was born April 30, 1928 in Ripley, TN. Upon graduating from Ripley High School in 1946, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan with the 720th Military Police Battalion. In late 1947, Sgt. Montague returned to the U.S. and attended the University of Tennessee while serving in the U.S. Air Force R.O.T.C. . He graduated with a civil engineering degree in 1951 and was promptly called into the Air Force during the Korean War. He was assigned to the Reconnaissance Technical Squadron at Rapid City Air Force Base, South Dakota (now Ellsworth AFB) as a photo interpreter.
Following his Air Force service, Charlie returned to Memphis and was employed by Buckeye Cellulose Corporation in the engineering department. This began a 40+ year career with Buckeye that culminated with his role as Director of North American Sales for Chemical Cellulose.
Following his retirement in 1994, Charlie enjoyed spending a great deal of time supporting his children and grandchildren's activities, and always pursuing and sharing knowledge along the way. In addition he enjoyed special times with his family at Perdido Key, FL and the Canadian Quetico wilderness park. He was a member of the University Club of Memphis.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruth Hoyt Montague, and his three children: Robert (Kay) Montague; Carol (Jack) Stokes; and, David (Kelli) Montague; his ten (10) grandchildren (Ross Montague; Laura Montague Haltom; Cameron Stokes Knight; John Stokes; Will Stokes; May Montague; Annie Montague; Ruthie Montague; Mary Van Montague; and, Joy Montague); and nine (9) great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sisters Harriet Sutton Fergason, Katherine Montague, and brother Joe Sutton, of Ripley, TN.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Christ United Methodist Church or Ripley First United Methodist Church.
For health considerations, a family-only service will be held.
