Charles Joseph Kuhn's Obituary
Charles Joseph Kuhn, known as Charlie to friends and Papaw to family, died on April 24, 2015, at the young age of 96. His wife of 68 years Dorothy Dalehite Kuhn , his “Little Jewel”, and family were at his bedside. Born September 25, 1918, to the late Joseph Charles Kuhn and Pearl Kuhn Bailey Mullins, Charlie was a member of our country’s greatest generation. He survived the Great Depression, served in the United States Navy during World War II, and re-built our nation as an electrician for seventy years with the local IBEW for the Shelby Electric Company. He attended Whitehaven High School and Memphis State University. Charlie and Dorothy worked and raised their family in Memphis and retired to Riverview, Florida, where he was a member of the First Baptist Church. They returned to Memphis in 2014 to be closer to family. Those of us who loved him most remember his jokes, his love of the game of golf, and above all his love for his family. Charlie leaves behind three daughters, Shirley Bell, Donna Lewis, and Sue Hunter, and sons in law the late Benny Bell, Phil Lewis and John Hunter. Papaw leaves a legacy of sport and humor to his grandchildren Steven Bell, Christopher Bell, Andy Lewis and wife Julie, Joey Lewis and wife Carmen, Stephen Lewis and wife Alison, John E. Hunter, Hope Hunter, and Sarah Hunter, and great grandchildren Simon Lewis, Connor Lewis, Grayson Lewis, and Sawyer Lewis. Charlie’s sister and brother, Ella Giles and Bill Bailey, preceded him in death. His brother, Gordon Kuhn, his sister Lottie Mason, and his aunt Clara Tragessor survive him. Services will be held on Monday, May 4th at 10am at the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Forest Hill Road, Memphis. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you say a prayer.
