Cecil Marvin Sowell Sr's Obituary
Cecil Marvin Sowell Sr., 83, of Memphis, TN, passed away on Saturday March 19th, 2022.
Cecil was born April 19th, 1938, in Memphis, TN to Roy Lee Sowell and Ruth Baily.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Sowell, children: Connie Streiber, Robin Jensen, Cecil Sowell Jr. (Sabrena), grandchildren: Zach McCrary (Jessica), Josh McCrary (Moriah), Rachel Carter, Amanda Ocampo (Jason), Scottie Jensen, and Sunshine Post (Trey), great grandchildren: Taylor McCrary, Sebastian McCrary, Josiah McCrary, Maylie McCrary, Manna McCrary, Madynn McCrary, Benjamin Post, Marshall Post, Annabelle Post, Hudson Ray, River Ocampo, and two sisters: Joyce Allen and Sue Clay.
Cecil was preceded in death by his parents: Roy Lee Sowell and Ruth Bailey, siblings: Roy Sowell Jr., Betty Messer, Bill Sowell, Norma Cooper, Patsy Carter, Nancy Lloyd, and grandson Seth McCrary.
Cecil attended Memphis Technical High School. After High School, Cecil proudly served in the United States Navy and was stationed in Millington TN., where he learned his trade as an Avionics Technician. After leaving the Navy in 1960, Cecil went on to work for Airborne Electronics and Robbins Airborne. In 1969 Cecil started his own company, Aero Electronics, which performed avionic and instrument repairs and installations on the Memphis Airport. In 1971 Cecil partnered with Tom Allen and John Williams to start another company called Memphis Avionics, which ultimately became The Memphis Group. The partners went on to form other successful companies (e.g. Inventory Locator Services and Avionics Specialists with Leroy Dahler). Cecil retired in 1987.
In retirement Cecil enjoyed riding motorcycles, playing golf, going to Picwick Lake, and spending time with his family.
Cecil was an active member of Forest Hill church of Christ and a strong supporter of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, March 29 from 12:00-1:00p.m.(visitation), 1:00-2:00p.m.(service), 2:00 (graveside service/burial). All will take place at Memorial Park Funeral Home located at 5668 Poplar Avenue.
