Catherine Ann Hughes' Obituary
Catherine G. Hughes, 84, of Memphis passed away October 29, peacefully with her six loving children at her side in her home of 40 years. Catherine, “Kay”, was born and raised by her parents James King Gernon and Nellie Gernon in Pittsburgh, Pa. She met her beloved husband Robert E. Hughes, Sr. while attending Carrick High School. Kay loved and inspired her children and grandchildren with her pleasant grace, and loving care. Kay was extremely active in the initial fund raising efforts as Committee Co-Chair to build St. Francis Hospital. She volunteered her time and care as a Pink Lady for the Hospital. Kay served as a Docent for The Pink Palace Museum. Kay loved to dance and enjoyed ballroom dancing. She won several Championships beginning in 1991, including The Florida State Championship of 1993. She continued her dancing enjoyment at, The Senior Citizen Centers, and The Crescent Club. Kay was also active in the Kirby Woods Garden Club and when Bob and Kay first moved to Memphis in 1970, Kay was active with The Welcome Wagon of Memphis.Kay was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Robert E. Hughes Sr. and one grandson, Justin Marshall Armitage. She leaves her children: Dr. Robert E Hughes Jr. of Memphis, Casey and Phillip McNeill of Eads TN., Dr. John M. and Lee Ann Armitage of Fredericksburg, Va., Mr. Edward and Mary Lynn Clark of San Antonio, TX., James W. and Colleen M. Hughes of Lake Zurich, IL., Arthur A. and Debera Hughes of Frazier Park Ca., her sweet sister Helen G. Bricmont of Pittsburgh, Pa. Twelve Grandchildren; Catherine “Paige”, Rachel and Johnathan McNeill, Madeline and Catherine Armitage, Keith, Ayla, and Brian Clark, Brenden and Natalie Hughes Hays, James and Jamie Hughes Roberts, Adam B. Hughes and Harry E. Hughes and one great grandchild MacAllister Roberts.A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday at 2 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetary, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis,TN 38187, with a service to follow at 3 pm.In lieu of flowers, The family requests that memorials be sent to The Justin Marshall Armitage Scholarship Fund for Soccer at James Madison University, call (540)568-2823, or mail to Advancement Gifts & Records/MSC3603, Harrisonburg, Va. 22807., Alzheimers Association, Friendship for Life, or to a Charity of Choice.
