Cary H. Barnes' Obituary
Cary H. Barnes, 60, was born in Memphis on March 27, 1958 to Carlton and Marian Barnes and passed from this life on March 18, 2019 at Methodist Hospice Residence after a valiant battle with cancer. He loved God, his family, and his friends, and he will be greatly missed. A Certified Public Accountant, he received a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Christian Brothers College, followed by a distinguished career in Service Quality and Process Improvement and Internal Audit at FedEx. He received the FedEx Five Star Award in 2005, served on the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and volunteered as a classroom instructor with Junior Achievement. In 2013 he retired from FedEx and became a consultant, most recently working at Pfizer. He was a devout Episcopalian and served as treasurer for the Church of the Holy Apostles in Collierville for a decade. In January, he received the Brian Pecon Lay Ministry Award for his many hours of service as treasurer, mentor in the Helping Hands ministry, chair of the Building and Grounds Committee, and member of the Administrative and Finance Committees. His generosity and his willingness to give of himself inspired others to do the same. Cary loved to cook, garden, travel, play tennis, and tend to the birds that visited his backyard; he was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and was known and appreciated for his wit and his wry sense of humor. He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Bonnie Ulrey Barnes, brother Steve Barnes (Connie), stepmother Jo Barnes, daughters Heather Jackson (Tommy) and Margaret Bans (Jason), stepsons Dylan Baker and Evan Baker, and four grandchildren. The family is grateful to Cary’s doctors, nurses, and caregivers for their compassionate care. Funeral services will be held at Church of the Holy Apostles, 1380 Wolf River Blvd., Collierville, on March 22 at 2:00 with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Church of the Holy Apostles.
