Carolyn Shirley Stephey's Obituary
Carolyn Shirley Stephey was born on April 9, 1937, to Dewitt Shirley and Alma Downs Shirley. Carolyn, their only child, was the delight of their hearts.
Carolyn grew up mostly in Memphis and graduated from Messick High School. She continued her education at Carson Newman, graduating in 1959 with a degree in psychology.
After college, Carolyn began her career with First Tennessee Bank where her intellect and abilities were recognized and appreciated. She served as personal secretary to the Chairman of the Board for many years. Additionally, she met many of her closest friends through her work.
Carolyn loved God and her church, Christ Methodist, and was a longtime member of the Lamplighter Class. At Christ Methodist, she gladly served wherever needed. She was on the Church Board and was scribe for the Trustees for many years.
Carolyn was an animal lover with a tender heart. She especially loved her two cats and viewed them as part of her family.
She loved traveling and saw much of the world. She particularly enjoyed trips to the Holy Land where she saw the empty tomb of Jesus and took Holy Communion in the Garden of Gethsemane. Carolyn visited Egypt where she saw the Pyramids. She was privileged to see much of Europe and to cruise around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America.
Carolyn was a loving family member and friend. In addition to her six first cousins, Carolyn leaves a group of cherished and longtime friends. Some of her friends date back to her childhood, some are from her church family and some from her work family. We all celebrate Carolyn and her 87 years of life as a life well lived.
If you wish to give a memorial gift, please give to either Christ Methodist Church or to the Humane Society.
