Carolyn Diane Shirkey's Obituary
Carolyn Diane Shirkey, 77, passed away on February 10, 2023
On June 7, 1945, Aaron Kirkwood Sr. and his wife Ethel Vivian had their first-born child. This child would be a baby girl and they named her “Carolyn Diane”. Carolyn would become the eldest of four siblings (Bettye, Marcia, Kenneth, and Aaron Jr.). Carolyn grew up in Houston, Texas. Carolyn was enthusiastic about education throughout her formative years. After high school, she attended Texas Southern University and graduated with a Major in English.
Upon attaining her college degree, Carolyn began full time employment with the United States Postal Service. Carolyn served as National President to the Network organization, which was premised on promoting women of color across the United States Postal Service. Carolyn would go on to work for the Postal Service for over 30 years before retiring.
Carolyn was the mother of two beautiful children, Stefanie Spigner and Jason Spigner. Carolyn was a devoted mother who was committed to her children being educated in the classroom and present in the church.
Carolyn held a great friendship with Roy Shirkey that evolved to a loving couple and becoming his wife and eternal life partner. Carolyn and Roy were married for over 35 years.
Carolyn and Roy were truly partners in all that they did, from traveling the country to attending sporting events, they were inseparable.
Carolyn was passionate about supporting others and often volunteered for West Clinic and proudly supported organizations that benefited the welfare of women in all communities.
Carolyn leaves to cherish her memories: her loving husband, Roy Shirkey; two children, Stefanie Spigner and Jason Spigner (Wunita); two children by marriage, Andrew Shirkey (Cynthia) and Matthew Shirkey; five grandchildren, Kanesha Johnson, James McGruder, Jordan Snow, Andrea Shirkey and Andrew John Shirkey; and five great grandchildren, Kailyn Velez, Khloe Velez, Moriah McGruder, Jeremiah McGruder and Kai Snow; one sister, Bettye Davis (Lawrence); and two sister in laws, Ann Shirkey and Susan Lash(Tim).
The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, February 20 at 1:00 p.m. with a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. all in the Fireside Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
