Carolyn Bell's Obituary
Carolyn Prewitt Bell of Memphis, Tennessee. Born October 3, 1923 and departed this life on June , 2012, 88 years old. Visitation will be on Monday, June 18 at 1 p.m. in the Parish Hall at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, 700 Poplar Avenue, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. at the cathedral and burial at Memorial Park Cemetery. Known her whole life by family and friends as “Tilly,” she was a lifelong resident of mid-town Memphis. Tilly was graduated from Central High School in 1941 and attended Rhodes College. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. Tilly worked for many years as a secretary for J. C. Bradford & Co. and subsequently at the University of Memphis in the English department. Tilly was preceded in death by her husband P. W. Bell, Jr., her father James A. Prewitt, Jr., and her mother Carolyn M. Prewitt. She is survived by her son Lewis Bell (Ruth), her grandchildren Jack Bell (Goodwyn Heard), Dabney Bell, and Winston Bell; her brother Jimmy Prewitt; her nephews and niece, Andy Prewitt (Jenny), Tom Prewitt (Eun Joo Chang), Merrin Prewitt (Mark), and Ben Prewitt (Susie); and her cousin Julie Denman (Bill), all of whom she dearly loved. “Blessed are those whose strength is in You, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Weeping they make it a place of springs . . . They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.” Psalm 84: 5-7. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial in Tilly’s name to Saint Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral.
