Carmen Hamilton Smith's Obituary
Carmen Hamilton Smith, 82, of Germantown, Tennessee, passed away on May 14, 2024. She was born on February 15, 1942, in Santiago de Cuba and emigrated to the United States in her youth.
Carmen was a woman of deep faith and a tireless advocate for the vulnerable and marginalized. She dedicated her life to helping others, from service in a mission in San Antonio, Texas to Catholic Charities to her tenure at Methodist University Hospital. A proud alumnus of Barry University in Miami, Florida, she earned a second master’s in clinical social work at the University of Memphis.
Carmen is survived by her brother, José Antonio Soler-Baillo, MD, her sons Hadley Hamilton, MD, JD (Kari), Jonathan Smith (Rogean), and granddaughter Madison Hamilton and grandsons Carter Hamilton, Réné and Lowell Smith. Carmen was predeceased by her parents, José Martín Soler-Baillo MD and Isabel Luisa Caminero, MD, PhD, her brother, José Miguel Soler-Baillo, MD, and her husband of forty years, Gid H. Smith. Carmen will be remembered as a mother and grandmother, a caregiver, a scholar and a fierce ally in the face of injustice. Carmen’s early study of classical piano at the Conservatory in Santiago and beautiful singing voice led to a lifelong love of music, ballet, and the arts.
A Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Memphis on Saturday, June 29 at 10:00 AM, followed by interment at Memorial Park Mausoleum at 12:00 PM.
