Brown Brooks, M.D. passed from this earthly home on December 24, 2022. A native South Memphian,
Brown moved from the family home in 2021 to be close to his son, Winston, in Tullahoma, TN.
Brown, born August 19, 1933, was the son of Brown Brooks, Sr, and Annie Dixon Brooks. An alum of South Side High School, he graduated in 1951. He graduated as a general surgeon from the University of Tennessee Medical School and completed residencies at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL and M.D. Anderson in Houston, TX. His surgical practice took place in Memphis, primarily at the Methodist South Hospital. During his career he received recognition for his skill and dedication.
Brown was an enthusiastic golfer and played frequently. He and his family enjoyed a fifty-year membership at Windyke Country Club where he was active in league and tournament golf. With his wife, Glenda, he traveled throughout the mid-south to play golf. Attendance at The Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, GA was a family rite of spring for decades.
His family and friends will remember him as an entertaining storyteller who could make them laugh with anecdotes from his life and family history. Brown was a proud South Side Scraper relating often tales of “Struggle, Strive, Succeed!”
Brown is predeceased by his parents, his wife Glenda Canada Brooks, and his son Brown Stuart
Brooks (Donna Brooks-Hottel).
He is survived by his daughter Sarah Lynn Brooks (Valerie Cotten) and his son Winston Brian Brooks (Shanna Bobo Brooks). Other survivors include six grandchildren: Shelby Brooks Mills (Conner Mills), Baylie Brooks Mullinax (Evan Mullinax), Cody Brooks, Anna Brooks, Conley Brooks, and Robert Brooks.
Brown will be interred at Memorial Park in Memphis where he will rest in peace with Glenda, the absolute love of his life. A celebration of life will be held at Windyke Country Club on December 30 from 3-5 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to the Memphis Humane Society.
