Bob Arthur Leopold's Obituary
BOB ARTHUR LEOPOLD
GERMANTOWN. Bob Arthur Leopold, 72, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Methodist University Hospital after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born March 7, 1950, in Amersfoort, The Netherlands, to Hendrik and Dolly (Bulsing) Leopold.
Bob came to America in 1971 on a Tennis Scholarship to attend Memphis State University, where he graduated in 1975 with a Business Degree. While at Memphis State, he met the love of his life, Diane Malone, and they were married on September 5, 1975. They shared 47 wonderful years of marriage.
Bob loved all sports, but his gift was tennis. During his youth in Holland, he was ranked number one in his state in the Junior division and seventh in the country in the under 21 division. During his freshman year at Memphis State, Bob won the Missouri Valley Conference in Singles and in Doubles.
After graduation, he became the tennis pro at Colonial Country Club, where he established a solid program for all members. Following his years at Colonial, Bob began his career with several investment firms in the Memphis area. In 1979, he joined Carty and Company, Inc., and over his 43-year career, he rose to Executive Vice President.
As a True Blue fan, he loved all Memphis Tigers' sports, holding season tickets for football and basketball. Bob always felt strongly about giving back to the university that provided him with many opportunities, and he was still actively involved with the men's and women's tennis teams.
From road trips cheering on the Tigers to beach trips with friends and family, he was always anticipating his next adventure.
Bob loved his home in America and became a United States citizen in 2009. However, he always remembered his Dutch heritage and enjoyed traveling back to visit family and friends.
His love of sports grew to include playing golf, watching his favorite racing drivers, and running 5Ks benefiting numerous charities, including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Bob consistently finished at the top of his division in every race he ran. His greatest passion was playing with his grandsons and cheering from the sidelines at all of their games.
He was a member of Germantown United Methodist Church, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity in college, and the M Club as an alumnus.
Bob received a bone marrow transplant in 2019 and was extremely grateful to his donor and the entire care team for the additional three years it provided him.
Affectionately known to his grandsons as "Opa," he was a kind-hearted man of great strength and character. He will be remembered for his contagious smile, positive outlook, and competitive spirit.
Bob is survived by his wife, Diane Malone Leopold, of Germantown, Tennessee; daughter, Lauren Leopold Wilgenbusch (Chad) of Germantown, Tennessee; and three grandchildren, Hannan Carter Wilgenbusch, Harris Hendrik Wilgenbusch, and Palmer Joseph Wilgenbusch of Germantown, Tennessee; He also leaves behind his beloved sister, Helen Leopold Kuis (Wietse) and brother, Paul Robert Leopold of Amersfoort, The Netherlands; and many loving nieces and nephews.
