Blanche Thomas Spain's Obituary
Blanche Thomas Spain, 93, of Memphis, TN passed away on August 8, 2009 at Baptist Memphis Hospital.Mrs. Spain is the widow of Douglass J. Thomas and W. Waddington Spain. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Spain was a graduate of Southside High School in Memphis where she was salutatorian of her class.Her beloved husband, Douglass Thomas, was a farmer, machinist, and candy-maker. He was a pioneer in the candy industry inventing Super-Bubble bubble gum. They were members of Chickasaw Country Club and were active in the Memphi organization for many years. After Mr. Thomas’ passing, she married Mr. Spain and moved to Charleston, S.C. where they lived in the Elizabeth Arden antebellum home for several years. Relocating back to Memphis, she lived out the remainder of her days surrounded by family and friends.She was an extraordinary philanthropist providing donations throughout her life to various organizations including Christian Brothers University where she was an active member of the Board of Directors.She is survived by two nieces, Jo Anne McLellan and her husband, Milton McLellan and Linda Sullivan; great niece, Rena McLellan Booth and great nephews, Milton McLellan Jr. and Shannon Sullivan; and great-great niece and nephews, Camryn, Alec, and Ryan Booth. She will be truly missed by all who loved her.The visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 10 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 11 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
