Bettye Louise Christley Wheaton's Obituary
Bettye Louise Christley Wheaton, aged 93, joined her husband, Robert L.
Wheaton in heaven on August 9, 2023. She is survived by her children, Stacey and
Frank Roddy of Chattanooga, TN, and Belinda and Jay Wheaton of Collierville, TN,
her brother and sister-in law Paul and Pat Christley of Dallas, TX, and her
grandchildren, Hannah Marley of Indianapolis, IN, Rebecca Marley of Collierville,
TN, and Matthew Marley of Chattanooga, TN. She will be greatly missed.
Bettye was born on June 28, 1930 in Canton, IL where she spent her formative
years. She moved to Memphis with her family after her father was transferred
with International Harvester. She was the oldest of six children.
Bettye went on to attend Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga TN. This is where her
journey as a Christian began. Her faith was very important to her and throughout
the years she spent time studying the Bible and sharing her faith with others.
Later in life, she also attended Mid-South Bible College in Memphis, TN.
Bettye then went to work for the United States State Department where she
worked at the Embassy in Iran, Africa, and South Korea. Bettye met her future
husband, Robert when he was stationed in Seoul, South Korea. After returning to
the United States, they married in 1966 and were the parents of two children.
Bettye and Robert and their children were stationed in the United States and in
West Germany. After Robert retired from the military, they relocated to
Memphis, TN to be near her family.
Bettye was a loving grandmother and spent lots of time with her grandchildren.
She never said “no” to any chance to spend time with them as they were growing
up as family was very important to Bettye.
Her last days were spent with her family at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in
Collierville, TN. She received the kindest care and her family is so grateful to the
staff.
A private service will be held with the family and close friends at the gravesite at
Memory Gardens on Raleigh Lagrange in Memphis, Tennessee on Tuesday,
August 15, 2023 at 10:00 am. Please come and share a brief memory of Bettye
with friends and family.
