Betty Faith Vaughan's Obituary
Betty Faith Vaughan, 84 of Germantown, TN passed away on October 10, 2013. She was born to the late Alec Marvin and Mary Joyner Faith on January 15, 1929 in Searcy, AR. Betty was able to graduate from high school at the age of 15 since she excelled academically; therefore, was promoted two grade levels. She moved to Memphis accepting a job with the Board of Education with the Memphis City Schools in May of 1956. Betty worked as payroll clerk for over 5000 employees and additionally making medical claims for these employees. She recorded all of this information manually with only one assistant. Betty was the first female computer programmer in Memphis, other that IBM employees. She programmed the 1401, which was the first solid state computer made by IBM. After 13 years of working at the Board, Betty retired and moved back to Arkansas accepting a position at First Security Bank in Searcy, AR in 1971. She became the Security Officer and vice-president for the entire bank. She retired from the bank in 1984. Betty’s last job was working with her sons for 20 years in their CPA practices, which was very memorable for both Betty and her sons. Betty was a loving, compassionate and loyal woman her entire life. She always put others first even up to the day before she passed away, telling one of her granddaughters that she needs to go home to take care of her children, saying that was more important than being with her at the hospital. Her family and her unwavering faith in God was what she most passionate. She loved to paint, sing, play the piano, cook and fish at Greers Ferry Lake. Betty will never be forgotten and will live in her family and friends’ hearts forever. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Lamar Vaughan of 63 years; brothers, Marvin Dean Faith and James Faith and brother-in-law, James Garner She is survived by her sons, Thomas Lamar Vaughan (Kathy) and Dennis Alan Vaughan; sister Mary Faith Garner; sister-in-law, June Faith; granddaughters, Laura Vaughan Howell (Lowry), Karen Elizabeth Jeter (Andrew), Amy Vaughan Bawcum (Jason), Rachel Vaughan and Rebecca Vaughan; great-grandchildren, Abby Williams, Allison Williams, Hannah Grace Howell, Kate Jeter, Caroline Jeter, Hudson Jeter and Jenna Kate Bawcum. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the Celebration of Life service begins at 12:00 p.m. at Forest Hill Baptist Church, 3645 Forest Hill-Irene Road, with entombment to follow at Memorial Park Mausoleum.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, (901)767-8930, “Behind the Stone Wall”.Location: Main Mausoleum, Cloisters Arrow Color: Blue
