Betty Stimbert's Obituary
Betty Sue Mothershed Stimbert, 83, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on December 3, 2017 at home surrounded by family. Born on April 9, 1934 in Memphis, TN to the late Ted R. and Virginia Wall Mothershed, Betty graduated in 1952 from Central High School. In 1956 she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Elementary Education from Memphis State College and in 1967 received an MA in Biology from Memphis State University. Mrs. Stimbert was an outstanding educator with a long and varied career. While teaching fourth grade students at Bethel Grove for Memphis City Schools, she was chosen to teach science on WKNO television. For four years she appeared as Miss Mothershed, Ms. Betty, and lastly Mrs. Stimbert, filming lessons for 3rd, 4th 5th, and 6th grades. Her love for science was infectious, inspiring children in the Memphis City Schools with her engaging science experiments and enthusiastic, positive nature. Betty taught 2nd grade in Tallahassee, FL, while her husband worked on his PhD from Florida State University. Upon her return to Memphis she taught first grade for four years and high school biology for 19 years at the Hutchison School, where her daughters attended. After retiring from teaching, she was a 15-year member of the Steppin’ Out Dancers, a tap dance group at the McWherter Senior Center, performing at venues across the city. Betty was a faithful member of Joy Circle at Christ United Methodist Church and the Lamplighter Sunday School class. She is remembered as a kind, energetic, fun-loving lady and a gracious hostess for family and friends. She dearly loved her daughters and grandchildren and cherished every moment she spent with them. She leaves her devoted husband of 55 years, Dr. Vaughn E. Stimbert; daughter Susan Bullock [Boyd] and grandchildren John, Andrew, and William Bullock of Richmond, VA; daughter Dr. Cindy Sands [Steve] and grandchildren Lilly and Weston Sands of Memphis; sister Ginger Webb [James] of Bartlett; and various nieces and nephews who loved being with their Aunt Betty. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 8, at Memorial Park Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow immediately in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorials be sent to The Hutchison School or Christ United Methodist Church.
