Betty Jean Carter's Obituary
Betty Jean Carter, a lifelong resident of Memphis, TN, passed away peacefully on February 24th.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Alfred Carter and Viola Robison Carter, and by her sisters, Elenor Carter Peebles and Evelyn Comstock Rhodes.
Betty is survived by her six nieces and nephews; Dr. Fred Neal Peebles (Elizabeth), Knoxville TN, Mary Peebles Knight (Frank, deceased), Chesapeake, VA, Mark Peebles (Jennie), Punta Gorda, FL, Kate Peebles Watson (John), Knoxville TN, Carol Comstock Koeppel (Dennis), Fairfax, VA, Paul Comstock (Kirsten Skaggs) Yellow Springs, OH, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews, as well as many dearly-loved friends who were like family to her.
After attending Central High School, Betty graduated from the University of Memphis with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
Betty taught at South Park Elementary, then was a Guidance Counselor at Colonial Junior High. After a successful teaching career, Betty became an Administrator of Personnel at Memphis City Schools Board of Education, retiring after 35 years of service.
During her college years, Betty became a proud member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.
She served as an officer and remained a loyal member of both the local and national alumnae chapters throughout her lifetime. Among her many accomplishments, Betty received the Outstanding Alumna Award as well as one of the highest international honors, the Arc with Diamonds and Pearls. This summer, she will be honored posthumously as "Chapter Grand" at the National Convention. Her sorority sisters and her affection for their squirrel mascot held a special place in her heart.
Betty loved her roses and her gardens, tending them with the same devotion that she showed for her faith, family and friends, nurturing and caring for them daily.
Betty was a gifted singer and her greatest passion was music. She was a soloist at Springdale Methodist and St. Luke’s Methodist, and was active in choirs and musical programs both secular and devotional. Betty was very proud to have performed with her choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
We will keep her song in our hearts as we cherish the memory of our dear friend and favorite Aunt.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, March 9th at St. Luke's Methodist Church, 480 S. Highland St., Memphis, TN 38111.
Following the service will be a Celebration of Life at the St. Luke’s Parlor.
