Berkeley Poole's Obituary
Berkeley Lake Poole, 86, died peacefully at home on Thursday, December 23, 2010. He was born on July 17, 1924 to Eleanor Rooker and Percy Lake Poole. During World War II, Berkeley served in the U.S. Navy in the submarine service in the Pacific Theater. Following the war, he received degrees from Louisiana State University and Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Berkeley became a Methodist minister for West Tennessee and served four years as chaplain for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center at Memphis. He was the first director for the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA), after which he returned to the ministry, serving until his retirement in 1987. The family would like to express their appreciation to Berkeley’s caregivers from Methodist Alliance Hospice. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Katherine Whitmore; sons, Stephen (B.G. Oates) and Christopher; grandchildren, Joel Poole, Brian Poole, and Angela High (Brian); and great-grandchildren, Caleb and Jacob High. Visitation will be from 12 – 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 29 followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church. The family requests donations be made to Asbury UMC or the Church Health Center.
