Benjamin Scott's Obituary
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SCOTT III, M.D., 92, died on January 13, 2013. He was a long time area thoracic surgeon and later medical director of Blue Cross of Memphis. He was born in Junction City, Arkansas and graduated from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. He graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in 1945. After an internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, he served a general surgery residency at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Memphis, TN. After completing his thoracic surgery residency at the University of Michigan, he returned to Memphis soon after he preformed the area’s first open heart procedure at Baptist Hospital. He was a lifelong active Christian and a member of Church of the Holy Communion. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America and the Hugo Dixon Award from the English Speaking Union. He was preceded in death by Laura Gill Scott, his wife, who died in 1990, and he leaves his wife, Helen Poetter Scott of Memphis; his daughter, Susan Melissa Scott; his son, John Christopher Scott of Knoxville; stepdaughters, Barbara Poetter of Kentfield, CA and Susan Poetter of Easton, CT; three grandchildren, Benjamin David Scott and Caroline Scott Chermely of Knoxville and Laura Scott Ashworth of Atlanta, GA, as well as six great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held in Memorial Park on Thursday, January 17 at 11 a.m. Memorials may be sent to the Trezevant Episcopal Foundation, Church of the Holy Communion or the charity of choice.
