Barrett Edmund Ferguson's Obituary
Barrett Edmund, ‘Barry’, Ferguson, 84, died on November 13, 2023, in Cordova, TN. After living in Florida for over 46 years, Barry moved to Tennessee from Ormond Beach last year to live with his son and daughter-in-law, David & Kim Ferguson. Barry was born in Newark, New Jersey, graduated from Bloomfield High School and served in the Navy for eight years during the Korean War. He was stationed in Villefranche, France and took full advantage of the locale, touring much of Europe while he was there. He attended the 1960 Rome Olympics, the Monte Carlo Grand Prix and skied the Alps. He served on the USS Des Moines and proudly helped on the Board of the USS Des Moines annual reunion in Mercer, PA, attending it for over 30 years. He was an appliance repairman by trade, which he learned in the Navy. He was a devout Catholic and was involved in the Knights of Columbus throughout his life. Prior to moving to Florida, he served in many positions including Grand Knight of the Don Bosco Council #5809 in Port Reading, NJ. He was a founding member and charter Grand Knight of the Monsignor Leo Gildea Council #7845 in Palm Coast, Florida and Florida State District Deputy.
He helped form several more Councils in the area, including the Prince of Peace Council #8791, where he was also a member. He enjoyed serving his community by getting involved, saying you get so much more out of anything if you are actively involved. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, bowling, horseshoes, traveling and photography.
He is survived by his sons, David (Kim) and Paul (Nancy) Ferguson, his daughter, Deborah (Michael) Zahariades, Daughter-in-law Holly Ferguson, 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his three sisters, Virginia Estes, Claire Byram, and Doris Kirby; wife of 42 years, Joan Ferguson in 2006; son, Michael Ferguson in 2022; and second wife, Faith Ferguson in 2021.
A mass will be held in his honor at the Prince of Peace Church in Ormond Beach, Florida on Monday, December 18th, at 10am with a celebration of his life immediately following in the Church Hall. He will be interred alongside his wife, Joan, at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the PKD Foundation or the Veterans Administration.
