Barbara Stanley's Obituary
Barbara Stanley 1951 – 2011 Barbara was born in Bakersfield CA and moved to Hayward CA as a teenager where she met the two great loves of her life, Larry her husband of 40 years and the first of many cats, Pooh, a feisty kitten discovered abandoned in a field by her father’s beloved Labradors. Larry’s job with Fedex took them to Tennessee where they lived in the same house in East Memphis for 27 years. A few more unwanted cats soon found a welcoming home with Barbara and Larry. Barbara’s love and compassion eventually became a full time career culminating with her founding home2cats, a non-profit shelter dedicated to the care of injured, abused and disabled cats and the occasional dog. Barbara worked tirelessly caring for a large number of animals and in fundraising and advocacy. Barbara battled cystic fibrosis throughout life making her work with animals laborious especially in her later years. She never thought of quitting and often said it was her love for cats that kept her going. Barbara is survived by her husband and partner, Larry, older siblings Ron, Ellen and Steve, and many loving and caring friends and colleagues. Service will be held on Tuesday, May 17 at 2:30 preceded by visitation at 1:30 at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, World Vision or home2cats.org (PO Box 752671, Memphis 38175).
