Barbara Monaghan Sherman's Obituary
Barbara Monaghan Sherman completed her journey to heaven on January 5, 2024
with her loving family by her side.
Barbara was born on February 14, 1930 to Matt and Irene Monaghan in
Blytheville, Arkansas. She grew up there and after high school attended the
University of Arkansas where she received a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s of
Science in Education. Barbara was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and a
member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor and Educational sorority. In 1952, Barbara
was Lady of the Realm representing Blytheville, Arkansas in the Cotton Carnival.
God blessed Barbara with the love of teaching. She was forever the teacher and
touched many children’s lives in her 45 years of teaching. Barbara nurtured and
loved all of her first and second grade students.
In 1961, Barbara met and married Dr. Phillip Sherman, Sr. She was welcomed into
the Sherman family as a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and
great grandmother. She filled each role with love. Barbara taught the family
organization and attention to detail, but most of all she taught the family the
importance of having a strong faith.
Barbara enjoyed playing tennis at Chickasaw Country Club, playing bridge,
traveling in Europe and the United States with Elderhostel, knitting, and
needlepoint. Her favorite pastime, though, was walking her beloved dog Toto.
For over 61 years, Barbara was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church.
There she was involved in Church Circle, Women of the Church, and Bible study.
Barbara was also a member of the Woman’s Exchange of Memphis.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister
Rosemary Gee of Ocala, Fla. She is survived by her stepsons, Dr. Phillip (Sandy)
Sherman, Jr. and Hugh (Pat) Sherman of Lodi, CA; her brother-in-law, E.B. Gee, Jr.
of Ocala, Fla.; grandchildren, Traci (John) Keller, Scott (Deede) Sherman, Dorothy
(Tony) Rose, Barbara (James) Buckley, and Ana (Darin) Guardanapo; a niece,
Ginger Gee and a nephew, E.B Gee, III; and 10 great grandchildren.
Barbara’s memorial service will be in the chapel at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, Sunday January 21, 2024 at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Second Presbyterian Church, 4055
Poplar, 38111 or The Memphis Humane Society, 935 Farm Road, 38134.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses who gave Barbara such
wonderful care at Baptist East Hospital, first and second ICU floors and fifth floor
hospice
