Barbara King's Obituary
Barbara Ann King, 86, went to heaven Saturday, November 07, 2015 from Ave Maria Home in Bartlett following a brief illness. She was born July 10, 1929 to Richard D. and Elizabeth Geimer King in Memphis. Following her father’s death she moved to Orlando, Florida with her mother for three years and returned to her home on Madison and attended Blessed Sacrament and Sacred Heart Schools. She attended Nazareth College near Bardstown, KY and after graduation entered the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in 1952, receiving the habit and the name Sister Marie Barbara, SCN on December 7, 1952. She earned her Master’s in Science at the College of St. Thomas in Minnesota. She taught Science and Math in the Sisters’ schools in Kentucky, Virginia, Massachusetts, and at Sacred Heart in Memphis. She withdrew from the community in 1971 to care for her mother, and later for her aunt. Barbara taught Biology and Math at Christian Brothers High School from 1970 to 1982 and then earned her RN at Shelby State Community College and nursed at the Veterans Hospital in Memphis until 1991 when she retired. She was a daily communicant of Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Private caregivers and Senior Care Management Solutions enabled her to remain at her home until October 21, 2015 when she entered Ave Maria Home in Bartlett where she received excellent care with attendance by La Francine Critchfield and the staff along with Cross Roads Hospice. A graveside service at Memorial Park will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 11:00 AM and a Memorial Mass will be held at the Brothers’ Chapel of Christian Brothers High School on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 9:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials for Barbara may be given to the Building Campaign at Immaculate Conception Cathedral.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119. “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”
