Barbara Jean McRaven Murphy's Obituary
Born in Pulaski, Illinois to parents, Raymond Leslie and Ella Marie McRaven, family of six children moved in 1941 from farm to the city of Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1948. After graduation, the family relocated to Florence, Arizona where Barbara attended two years at Arizona State University. She and Dave married June 11, 1951 and lived in Idaho for him to finish his college at University of Idaho as a member of the football team and ROTC officer. After Dave's graduation, they were stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina where her two sons, Mark and Scott were born. After Dave's military service completed, they moved to Memphis, Tennessee and Barbara returned to college at Memphis State University to complete her teaching degree. She worked and retired as a school teacher for Memphis City Schools for 29 years. Her passion of teaching and education was apparent in every phase of her life! She was the quiet, private leader of the Murphy family. Her favorite hobbies were sewing, reading 4-5 books weekly, and travel with her family as she traveled to England and France and visited most of the historic landmarks of the USA. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Church in Germantown, Tennessee. Preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Dave Murphy, her siblings, Elaine, Leslie, Audrey, Gerry. She is survived by her sons Mark (Teresa) and Scott, grandchildren, Megan, Morgan, Cameron, and great grandchildren, J.J. and her only surviving brother, Dale McRaven of Porter Ranch, California along with many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to Grace Evangelical Church @ 9750 Wolf River Blvd, Germantown, Tennessee 38139, Methodist Hospice 6416 Quince Road or a charity of your choice. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. with a funeral service to follow at 10:30 a.m. all in the Fireside Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN, 38119.(901) 767-8930
