Barbara Harris' Obituary
BARBARA RAMSEY HARRIS passed away August 2, 2012 in Baptist Hospital after a brief illness. Barbara was born in Farmerville, Louisiana on November 2, 1930, the daughter of Benjamin Levi and Jeffie Bearden Ramsey. She graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1951, and retired from the US Postal Service in 1992 after 18 years of employment. Always a homemaker first, she also was a musician – organist for churches in Monroe LA, Mobile, AL, and Wesleyan Hills Methodist in Memphis. In recent years her beautiful music filled the Chapel as she played piano for her Mullins Methodist Crusader Sunday School Class. She supported her children’s interests. When they had morning paper routes, she drove the vehicle so they could deliver the papers. When they were in Scouting, she worked with that program and was honored to receive the “Silver Fawn” award for her activities in the Scouts. Her hobby was needle work – she cross-stitched more things than you can imagine – her family and friends fondly remember exquisite wall plaques, cushions, dining room chair seats, table cloths, homemade Christmas stockings, and sit-arounds. The family Christmas tree was adorned only with her beautiful hand-made ornaments. She is survived by Cecil Harris, her husband for 62 years, sons, David Harris (Sallie) of Memphis, and Mark Harris (Beth) of Lafayette, LA; five grandchildren, Natalie Harris Angelle (Justin) of Lafayette, LA, Mauree Harris Brooksher (Steven) of Baton Rouge, LA, Andrew Harris (Emily) of New York, NY, Rebecca Harris and William Harris of Memphis; two sisters, Mary Sue Sweet of Ruston, LA and Ernestine Brantley of Monroe, LA, brother-in-law, Louis Harris of Shreveport, LA; and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends in the Sanctuary of Mullins United Methodist Church where she and Cecil were long time members, on Sunday, August 5 between 1:30 and 3 p.m. Services in the Chapel will follow the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Mullins United Methodist Church, 4 N. Mendenhall, Memphis, TN 38117 or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, (901)767-8930, “Behind the Stone Wall”.
