Barbara Graves' Obituary
BARBARA ANN FLIPPIN GRAVES passed away peacefully December 11, 2011. She was born on Novemeber 8, 1930 in Jackson, MS. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louise and Randell Flippin. She leaves her husband, Lester R. Graves, Jr., M.D., to whom she had been married for fifty nine years. She also leaves their children, Gwen Graves Maxwell, Lester R. Graves III, D.D.S., Cynthia Graves Hill; a sister, Patricia Smithwick; a brother,, Tommy Flippin; and several grandchildren, Lester R. Graves IV, Logan Alexander Graves, Kyle Morgan Ervin, Erin Elizabeth Ervin, Austin LePrince Hill. Additional surviving family members include these grandchildren, Drayton Hutton, Katie Maxwell, Captain Lesley Lilly, Kristie Stewart, Erica Grissom, Shelly Hill; also five great-great- grandchildren. Barbara attended Central High School in Memphis and Southwestern College where she was a member of Alpha Omega Pi Sorority, a cheerleader for Southwestern and sweetheart of SAE Fraternity. She was active in Le Bonheur club and the Cotton Carnival, serving as a Duchess of Memphii. She was active in the Madonna Circle and the Baptist Cancer Philanthropic Organization. Barbara enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and fishing with her husband. Together, they enjoyed tennis, snow skiing, horseback riding, and water sports. Traveling was a big part of her life. Africa and Alaska were her most liked areas but she also enjoyed Austria, Switzerland, The Baltics, and European countries, especially Germany and Holland. She always said she was happiest at Treefall, their home at Pickwick Lake, and Cedar Lane, their home in Arlington, TN. Barbara liked her activities at the University Club and The Racquet Club where she was a member. Her love of animals shone brightly in her care of their many Laborador Retrievers and horses in her lifetime. Visitation will be Thursday, December 15, from 5-8 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at the Church of Holy Communion on Walnut Grove Road on Friday, December 16, at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions are requested to be sent to the Breast Cancer Memorial Fund c/o Baptist Memorial Healthcare Foundation.
