Such a wonderful individual.
Umpy told me about climbing the two smoke stacks out on the west end of Millington so I drove out there and look at them. At the very top they flare out, and Umpy said that he got up to the top and he had to go over that flare in order to look down into the smokestack, and he did. And I took pictures of that and looked at that. I was absolutely amazed that he or anybody else would have done that.
Umpy was an incredible and impassioned story teller, and a wonderful and worldly person. He was totally in his element when he was ardently speaking about his world travels, or his enthusiasm for various woods, or passion for Indian pottery, or his time committed to being a Boy Scout leader. Needless to say, he was quite the conversationalist, and had a positive effect on everybody he came across….including me. I found his conversations were a learning moment, yet filled with amusing discourse. I’ll never forget his story about the time he hung out with Willie Nelson. Or, going to his fascinating museum like home full of relics, that he designed and built containing the woods he loved. He and Peggy were the perfect couple and were always so gracious. He will be tremendously missed and always remembered. Rest in Peace in the everlasting embracment of God…
My favorite Uncle Umpy, was a fabulous Man, Husband, Father, Scout Leader and Wood Expert. He taught me so much throughout my life, about his travels all over the world, his indepth knowledge of wood, his outdoor knowledge obtained through his vast experience in the Scouts, his archeological digging experiences with his Father and even how to play Chess. It was always an adventure being at Umpy and Peggy's home, from a small child til a grown adult. He was always very loving and funny and a good Christian man and adored my Aunt Peggy, David and Smith. He always joked around with our Mom, Sandra, and enjoyed being a foursome with our Dad, Don as well. Thank you for sharing your lifetime of experiences, we will certainly miss all of your vivid, descriptive stories! Fly high Uncle Umpy! Love, your Niece, Lisa
I have known Umpy since he was 12 years old when he Joined Ole 97 Boy Scout troop. During all those years I witnessed a man of character, integrity and love of his fellow man. Never did I hear from Umpy a negative comment about any subject--he was always positive and on call for anyone who neded him. Umpy was the epitome of the 'good Scout' and lived that role every day of his long life. Umpy grew up to become the friend to many with his pure heart and devotion to his family and friends. He will be missed by many--God speed Umpy. Lou Pritchett
