Asher Roberts' Obituary
Asher “Ace” Roberts, 76, of Memphis, passed away on February 8, 2014 after a long illness. He was born in Oneida, Kentucky, on April 16, 1937. He attended the University of Tennessee, Memphis. He served in the United States Navy as mid-shipman and was stationed in Leemore, California and Millington. He played for the All Navy and Champion Paper basketball teams. A career highlight included Ace scoring 76 points in one game. Ace sold real estate for over 50 years. In 1963, he joined Carl Grant & Company. In 1974, he formed a real estate brokerage, Ace Roberts, Inc. Pyramid Realtors acquired his company, and he subsequently acted as managing broker for Pyramid and Crye-Leike. In addition to selling real estate, he founded River Hill Homes, Inc., a construction business which built or remodeled hundreds of homes in the Mid-South. Ace was active in real estate and banking organizations. He served on the board of directors of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors and served on several MAAR committees. He was a charter member of the MAAR’s Multi-Million Dollar Sale Club in 1972 and served as its president in 1983. He helped charter Shelby Bank in Bartlett and served on BancorpSouth’s board of directors. Ace is survived by his wife, Tina Collier Roberts, whom he wed in 1999. His first wife, Betty Thrasher Roberts, predeceased him in 1995 after a thirty-three year marriage. Ace was preceded in death by: his parents, Golden and Lou Ella Roberts, his sisters, Ann Roberts and Lois Ratliffe; and his brother, Stanley. In addition to his wife, Ace is survived by: his daughter, Jennifer Pounds (Darin) of Memphis; his sons, Martin (Molly) of Oxford, Mississippi; Richard (Christina) of Memphis; and step-son, Dabney Collier (Ginger) of Memphis. He is also survived by eleven treasured grandchildren: Sarah Roberts Fletcher (Mitch) of Roanoke, Virginia; Meg and Bette Roberts of Oxford, Mississippi; and the following in Memphis: Collier and Preston Roberts; Hallie, Katie and Parker Pounds; Stuart, Dabney and Claiborne Collier. He is also survived by a great-grandson, Greyson Fletcher of Roanoke, and his brothers, Tooter (Bonnie) and Willard Roberts of Cincinnati, Ohio. Ace’s favorite pastimes included spending time with family and friends, hunting, and fishing. He thrived playing golf with the “dogs” at Memphis Country Club. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m., Monday, February 10 in the Rotunda at Independent Presbyterian Church. The memorial service will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 12, at Independent Presbyterian Church.
