Arthur David "Dave" Windsor's Obituary
CDR. Arthur David (Dave) Windsor, USN (Ret), 87, passed away on April 20, 2022 in Germantown, Tennessee. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lyn Menzie Windsor. Born in Chicago, Illinois on September 22, 1934 to Myrtle and Alton Windsor, the family moved to Bloomington, Indiana in 1944. Dave graduated from University High School and from Indiana University with a BS in Business Administration in 1961. He entered service as a Naval Aviation Cadet at NAS Pensacola, FL. After having completed Advanced Navy flight training specializing in carrier aviation at Cabiness Field (Corpus Christ) TX, Dave was designated a Naval aviator in June 12, 1956.
Dave had a 21 year career with the U.S. Navy. He was an attack pilot who had tours of duty in Vietnam on the U.S.S. Ranger and in the Middle East on the U.S.S. Saratoga. On shore duty, he was a flight instructor in VA-95. Following that tour he was ordered back to the U.S.S. Ranger for a second and a third Vietnam deployment with ship’s company as the Aircraft Handling Officer. From 1971-1975 he was the NAS Bermuda Administrative Officer. From 1975-1979 he was stationed at NAS Corpus Christ. In 1979 he was ordered to the Naval Air Technical Training Center at Millington, TN, where he was Director of the Air Traffic Control School and later as the Executive Officer. Dave retired from naval service 1 July 1982.
Commander Windsor was awarded the following: Air Medal (9 awards); Navy Commendation Medal (with Combat “V” and 2 stars); Navy Unit Commendation; Meritorious Unit Commendation (with star); National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal (with 4 bronze stars); Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Meritorious Citation; and Meritorious Service Medal.
After retiring from the Navy, Dave enjoyed traveling and attending national Tailhook conventions and reunions of Attack Squadron VA-145 from the U.S.S. Ranger.
Over the past years, Dave was a member of two organizations special to him. He was an active member of the Association of Naval Aviation (ANA). He was an enthusiastic participant in the activities of the Republican Party of Shelby County.
Dave is survived by his wife Lyn and their three daughters: Beth Kropf (Peter Kropf); Carrie Montgomery (Van Montgomery); and Conde Devine (Brian Devine); Five Grandchildren: Alexis Windsor Kropf (Juan Silva Riquelme); Olivia Kropf; Kean Devine; Rory Devine; and Menzie Montgomery; One great-grandson, Milo Silva Kropf; and brother Don Windsor.
