Arthur James Walters' Obituary
Arthur James Walters, age 88, passed away at his home surrounded by family in Memphis, TN on Saturday, May 18, 2024 after a brief illness.
Art was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 19, 1935 to Velma and Arthur C. Walters. The family later moved to Memphis, TN where Art graduated from Treadwell High School and William R. Moore School of Technology. He worked at Tri-State Armature and Electrical Works for 40 years before retiring in 2000. He made wonderful friends by spending his entire career with the same organization. He started out as a technician and rose through the ranks to lead the repair department. His final post was as chairman of the board which he jokingly said that they gave to the “oldest living retired guy.”
Art loved baseball and his favorite teams were the St. Louis Cardinals and the now defunct Memphis Chicks. He inherited his love of music from his parents and could play almost any instrument by ear. This was often a sore spot with his sister who was a classically trained pianist! He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and was at many of their school related functions. He was a good pet parent to his cats and his weekly “grandaddy doggy day care” visits from his children’s pets.
He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Reams (Lane) of Lebanon, TN and Barbara Price (Keith) of Memphis, TN; and five grandchildren, Nicholas (Jenni) Reams, Evan (Amber) Reams, John Reams, Sarah Price and Annie Price.
He is preceded in death by his first wife Mildred Walters (d. 1991) and second wife Peggy Walters (d. 2019); sister Dr. Ada Jane Walters and parents Velma and Arthur C. Walters.
He was an excellent father and grandfather and an outstanding husband. He loved his daughters and always referred to their husbands as “his sons.” He cared for both wives with fierce devotion and compassion as they each battled with different ailments. He was generous, kind, and loving and leaves all of us with a beautiful example of how life should be lived and shared.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 1st at 1:00pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Concord Academy in Memphis, Tennessee (https://concord-academy.org/
