Anthony C. Cortese's Obituary
Anthony C. (Tony) Cortese, 85, died Monday, November 18, 2013, at Methodist North Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Cortese was retired from International Harvester after 39 years, and was a Pit Supervisor at Horseshoe Casino for 18 years. Tony was past president of the Raleigh Hills Community Club and the Trafalgar Village Civic Club, as well was the past secretary and treasurer of the Trafalgar Village Neighborhood Association. Mr. Cortese was past king and chairman of the Grand Krewe of Sphinx, and one of the founders and first chairman of the Grand Krewe of aaNI, both of which are Cotton Carnival originations. His hobbies were working in his yard, bowling, painting, and his grandchildren. Tony leaves his wife of 63 years, Virginia B. Cortese, two daughters Virginia Poteete (Jim) and Toni Gygi (Ron, deceased), and four grandchildren, Jim Poteete, Tony Poteete, Don Gygi and Tammy Gygi and a brother John Burns Cortese (Donna). The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 21, from 5:00p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Memphis Memory Gardens.
