She was born in Memphis, Tennessee but her family moved to Weiner, Arkansas. She graduated high school there and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arkansas State College. Ann wasn’t one for the country though and headed back to Memphis. She attended Memphis College of Art and then worked for the Memphis Park Commission. She was a natural teacher, encouraging all to explore the arts.Ann enjoyed reading, gardening, photography, and making jewelry. She loved to dance and travel. She was always involved in her daughters’ activities whether it was running the school paper drive, making ballet costumes, letting sorority sisters sleep over during rush week, or feeding the crew for the Jaycees Haunted Houses. And her birthday cakes were legendary!She is survived by her husband, Neil G. Smith; her daughters Valerie Hight (Kenny) and Linley Schmidt; five grandchildren, Grayson Akridge, Alden Schmidt, Duane Hight (Kaylee), Kaylie Groves (Matt), and Eric Hight; her brother Bill Freeman (Joanna), and nieces and nephews and cousins who loved her.The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a memorial service celebrating Ann’s life to begin at 3:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue in Memphis.To view the memorial tribute video, please click the link below: https://www.tributeslides.com/tributes/show/9ZF86W8QNYLS87WK
