Alvin "Carter" Powers' Obituary
“If they don’t want to hear about my grandchildren, they shouldn’t come talk to me.” Known for his scrupulous memory, his love for rotel dip, and his propensity to brag about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Alvin Carter Powers, Sr., 96, passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2017.Born March 21, 1921 in Sharon, Tennessee, Carter (A.C.) was the only boy in his first grade class to graduate high school. After high school, Carter served in the Navy during WWII. His railroad career at Illinois Central spanned 39 years and was the source of many stories he shared with his family. He was also a partner in Post Printing, Inc. and a longtime member of Bellevue Baptist Church. He met his wife on a blind date on Friday the 13th, and the pair was married for 59 years.Carter is preceded in death by his wife, Addie Mae Powers and son Harold Frederick Powers. He is survived by his three sons and their families, Dr. Al Powers, Mrs. Kathleen Powers, Mr. Phil Powers, Mrs. Wendy Powers, Mr. John Powers, Ms. Teresa Powers; nine grandchildren, Alvin Carter Powers, III, Brian McKay Powers, Caroline Powers Saunders, John Robert Powers, Jr., Christopher Frederick Powers, Haley Marie Powers, Phillip Arden Powers, Jr., Jordan Nicholas Powers, and Perrin Adeline Powers; and four great-grandchildren, Jackson Thomas Powers, Adelaide Arden Saunders, Robert Greer Saunders, and Reid Ebeling Powers.The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 3 at Memorial Park Funeral Home (5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN). The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 4 at Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Fred Powers Scholarship Fund at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary (2095 Appling Road, Cordova, Tennessee 38016; 800-968-4508).“Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”.
