Allen Goodfriend's Obituary
Allen Goodfriend died Friday evening, June 9th, at the age of 89. Allen was born in Memphis, Tenn., where he lived his entire life. He worked in the pharmaceutical industry prior to his retirement. He was an avid fisherman and tennis player.Allen was known by his friends and family as a generous and deeply caring man. He was famous for his witty one-liners. Born into a Reformed Jewish family, he converted later in life to Christianity. As a young man, Allen saved the lives of 31 residents of a boarding house by alerting them to a fire. He was also a veteran, serving in the United States Navy in the 1940s.Allen is preceded in death by his father and mother, Joseph Goodfriend and Inez Summerfield, by his brother, Joseph Goodfriend, Jr., and by his wife, Gloria Morris. He is survived by three daughters – Carolyn Wilder of Olive Branch, Miss., Tena Hobbs of Memphis, Tenn., and Gloria (John) Gonyea of Sterling Heights, Mich. – three grandchildren – Lori (Tripp) Graham of Collierville, Tenn., D.J. Hobbs of Memphis, Tenn., and Tyler Gonyea of Sterling Heights, Mich., – and great-granddaughters, Avery Grace Graham of Collierville, Tenn. and Evyn Graham of Collierville, Tenn.Funeral services will be held at Memorial Park at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, with visitation at 10:30. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to St. Jude or Crossroads Baptist Church in Eads.He will be sorely missed.
