Alice Whittington's Obituary
Alice M. Whittington, 88, of Collierville, died at home on Sunday, July 3, 2011 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earle L. Whittington, Jr., her parents Alice Duke and Johns Benjamin Martin, her brother J.B. Martin, Jr., her in-laws, Earle and Margaret Whittington, brothers-in-law Dr. John D. Pigott, Edwin Saunders, and Blake Whittington and his wife Gloria, and sister-in-law Joanne Whittington. She leaves her daughter, Alice Duke Whittington (Philip) Hollis of Rossville, TN and son Earle Ligon (Susan) Whittington III of Decatur, GA. She also leaves four grandsons, Ed Hollis, Ben Whittington, Jonathan Whittington, and Peter Hollis, as well as a sister, Frances Saunders of Henderson, NC, a half-sister Rosa B. Martin of Madison, NC, sisters-in-law Mitchelene Martin of her hometown Reidsville, NC, Jean Pigott of Memphis, Elizabeth (Fred) Minnich of York, PA and brother-in-law Frank (Sue) Whittington of Houston, TX. Survivors also include 14 nieces and nephews and their spouses as well as many great nieces and great nephews. Over the years of living in Reidsville, NC, North Little Rock, AR, South Fort Mitchell, KY, Memphis, Whitehaven and Collierville, TN, she was an active member of the Presbyterian and Methodist churches, the last being Collierville United Methodist Church. In Whitehaven, before her move to Collierville, she was Past President and national lifetime member of the PTA, the Sequoia Garden Club, and the Kennedy Book Club. She has also been a long time member of the Chucalissa Chapter of the D.A.R. In Collierville, she was a member of the Contemporary Club, the Friends of the Library, and was a charter member of the Schilling Farms YMCA where she directed the Senior Bridge Program. She enjoyed playing with several bridge clubs ….. her lifelong joy. Visitation will be at Collierville United Methodist Church from 10:00-11:00 am on Tuesday, July 5th. A private graveside service will be held at 12:00 noon in Memorial Park. Memorial Park Funeral Home has charge. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Earle Whittington fund at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly, 84 Blue Ridge Circle, Black Mountain, NC 28711, the Collierville Friends of the Library, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
