Alex Harris, Jr.'s Obituary
Alex Harris, Jr. 66, beloved father, husband, grandfather and friend went to be with our Lord on April 3, 2014. He confessed a belief in Christ at an early age at New Era Baptist Church in Memphis, TN. Alex joined Temple of Deliverance COGIC under the leadership of Bishop G.E. Patterson, where he was a member for over 30 years. He was a man who put home, church and family first. Alex was born in Collierville, TN on April 30, 1947 to Mary King Harris and Alex Harris. At approximately three years of age, his family moved to the Orange Mound Community in Memphis. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1964 and served his country for three years in the US Air Force. In 1967, he married the love of his life, Rita Thomas Harris and to this union three children were born; Alisa Renee, Crystal, and Alex Harris, III. Alex worked as a mail clerk for the US Postal Service for over 30 years. After retiring from the Post Office in Memphis, TN, Alex purchased and operated a small coin operated laundry located in his beloved Orange Mound Community for almost ten years. His retirement years were filled with gardening, landscaping his eight acre lawn, barbecuing for family and playing basketball with his grandchildren. He is survived by wife, Rita Thomas Harris; a son Alex III and his wife, Michele; daughters, Alisa Renee Harris and Crystal Harris; sister, Helen (Ralph) Harris Torrence, grandchildren, Addison, Candice, Christy, Cooper, Heavenly, and Tia; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Harris; father, Alex Harris; and brother, Lorenzo Johnson.The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, from 1:30 pm until service time of 2:30 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38119, 901-767-8930, “Behind the Stone Wall”Location: Westlawn II Arrow Color: Yellow.
