Addie Mae Powers' Obituary
Addie Mae Powers, 89, “Let him who stole steal no more,” She would say with a wink, as she snuck a fry from whichever grandchild she was treating to a Happy Meal. Known for her love for children, her passion for the Bible, and the commitment to her family, Addie, surrounded by her three sons and husband of 59 years, passed away, Saturday, October 15, 2011. She was raised in Henderson, TN, and graduated from Freed-Hardeman College. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and a member for more than 60 years of Bellevue Baptist Church where she taught children’s Sunday School for 55 years. She is preceded in death by her son, Fred Powers, and her siblings, Ernestine Phillips, Katie Leavitt, and Robert Phillips. She is survived by her husband, Alvin Carter Powers of Memphis; three sons and their wives, Dr. Alvin C. (Al) and Kathleen Powers of Brentwood, TN, Phillip A. (Phil) and Wendy Powers of Germantown, TN, John R. and Teresa Powers of Brentwood, TN; three siblings in Memphis, Ed Phillips, Polly Gowan, and Mary Alice Miller; nine grandchildren, Alvin Carter Powers, III, Brian McKay Powers, Caroline Powers Saunders, John Robert Powers, Jr., Christopher Frederick Powers, Haley Marie Powers, Phillip Arden Powers, Jr., Jordan Nicholas Powers, and Perrin Adeline Powers; and one great-grandson, Jackson Thomas Powers. She also leaves an adopted brother, Dr. K. Jhin of Malibu, CA. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, October 17 at Memorial Park Funeral Home (5655 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN) and on Tuesday, October 18, from noon until the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Bellevue Baptist Church (2000 Appling Road, Cordova, TN). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Fred Powers Scholarship Fund at Mid America Baptist Theological Seminary (2095 Appling Road, Cordova, Tennessee 38016; 800-968-4508).
