I met Bob when he first arrived in the United States. We were both freshman playing tennis for Memphis State University. He said I was the only person he could understand. The Southern drawl baffled him. We all had nicknames on the team. Bob was 'King' Leopold. I am Scott Brown from Michigan, aka 'Superman'. We were roommates in Robinson Hall. We became close friends making so many awesome memories, many of which I cannot fit in this space. He visited our family in Michigan and got to know my parents and sisters. The 'King' was a great friend. I'm so glad I was able to talk to him a few times in the last couple of years. On behalf of all your teammates at Memphis State.... we'll miss you!
Great memories of oom Bob! Although he lived abroad, he was always a part of our lives! When we were kids he used to bring super nice American outfits for all of us! When we grew older, he was always interested in what was happening in the Netherlands, sport, education, familiy stuff! He loved it when we sent him pictures of ice skating in the winter or field hockey! Oom Bob is just such a nice person, always extremely fit! A family man who loved bitterballen. During his illness we had a lot of contact via what’s app. Although he had hard times, he was always positive! An example of a happy person! Thanks for being in our lives, we love you! Before we moved to the US in 2012, I’d only vaguely known we had an uncle Bob in Tennessee. After our move you became our only relative on this side of the pond. So many times you and Diane visited us in Atlanta and every time we could enjoy your contagious smile and optimism. From our first steps on American soil you offered your support by co-signing our car loan which helped us tremendously. We always felt safe knowing we had a caring family member living so close.
In May 2021 we finally visited you all in Memphis and camped out on your driveway. What sweet memories we have of that beautiful afternoon hanging out with y’all while the kids were playing together and catching frogs. We wish you all so much strength in dealing with this great loss. Bob was such a beautiful person. We are going to miss you so much Bob and we will cherish all the great memories forever!
