My name is Luther Graef. My father was the sister of Bernards mother, hence he was my cousin. I remember the many times we played as children in his fathers plumbing shop on Milwaukees south side. Bern went on to Catholic U and I to Marquette U. After spending several years in the US Army, I , over the years tried on many occasions to contact Bern but for some reason he chose not to renew a relationship and I have always wondered why for I certainly loved and respected him.
I had Rosemary Regan as a teacher at Messmer and Fr. Bartels as our spiritual advisor. They were both my favorites. Mrs Bartels and her family have my Deepest Sympathy. So glad they had each other for 47 years.Rita Christianson [Rinzel was my maiden name.]
I knew him while I attended Messmer High School. Smart. Intense. Always listened to ” us” teenagers. Married my absolute best teacher I ever had – at the time her names was Ms. Reagan. My condolences. Lin (Hackett) Daley

Looking at this picture with most likely Kaitlyn’s arms around Grandpa, I still see in his eyes the energy and happiness that Love empowered in him. I knew both Bernard and Rosemary at Messmer. They were Fr. Bartels and Ms. Regan than. As a student, they were teachers I respected and liked. I am so glad that they found each other and made a great life and family.
