Sara Matthews
September 12, 1935 - May 8, 2022
Sara Work Matthews passed away on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 8, 2022, at her home in Cordova, TN with family at her side. She will be greatly missed by her family, extended family, and dear friends. Sara always greeted you with a glowing smile, was known for her stories, sense of humor, infectious laugh, and encouraging words. As a lifelong Memphian, she raised her family, ran a local business, and generously devoted her time and energy to her community. She was involved in several organizations including The Duration Club, Cordova Garden Club, Womans Exchange, Quilting Guild, Cotton Carnival, just to name a few. In her later years, she loved playing Gin with her Friday night card group. She held a deep appreciation for fine arts including theatre, opera, and the symphony. She had a passion for travel. We will miss all the memories and stories she shared about touring the world. Although she has been all over the world, Memphis was always home. In the last few months, she reminded us, “I have had a full and good life. It didn’t come without challenges, but the good far outweighed the bad.” Sara is preceded in death by her mother Mildred Turner, sister Ruth Pate, her son J. Frank Black, and her late husband William C. Matthews, T. Brewer, and John Frank Black. She is survived by her brothers Gerald Work, Randy Turner, son John Douglas Black, daughters Cathy Black Stanford and Caren Black Nettleton. Grandchildren: Michelle Black-Poole, CSM John Black, Jesse Black, Matthew Stanford, Emily Stanford, and Caitlin Orndorff, Blake Nettleton, and Luke Nettleton. Great Grandchildren: James (Victoria) Kelley, Cynthia Poole, Vanessa (Logan) Black, J.C. Black, Isaiah Black, Summer Black, and brothers Samuel and Theo Stanford. The Funeral Service will be Saturday, May 14th, at the Memorial Park Funeral Home Fireside Chapel. Visitation starts at 12 pm, followed by the service at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Church of the Transfiguration or Cordova Garden Club.
