Danny Clark Rich April 23, 1951, through July 3, 2022, 71 years of age, Memphis, Tennessee – Danny passed away unexpectedly on July 3, 2022, as a result of injuries sustained from an automobile accident. He was surrounded by the sound of his loving family singing hymns until his final breath. Danny was born on April 23, 1951, along with his twin brother, David, to Cyril & Fleda Rich of Payette, Idaho. After graduating from Payette High School, Danny continued his studies at the University of Idaho where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1973. Danny furthered his education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, obtaining a master’s degree in physics in 1977. Danny met the love of his life while attending Virginia Tech. He married Phyllis Phillips on August 16, 1975. Danny and Phyllis then moved to Troy, New York where he enrolled at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and earned a Ph.D. in color science. Danny began his career in 1980 with Sherwin Williams Paint Company where he directed work on optical properties of coatings, process control, computer modeling, and statistical experimental design. He later joined Applied Color Systems in Princeton, New Jersey where he researched color simulation, soft proofing, instrument design, and optical metrology and calibration. In 1998, Danny joined the Sun Chemical Corporation and was the Director of the Color Research Laboratory in the Daniel J. Carlick Technical Center in Carlstadt, New Jersey. His responsibilities included visual and instrumental tolerancing, corporation wide instrument reproducibility, color management strategies and the technology behind color management for package printing, optical calibration and lighting engineering for Sun Chemical world-wide. Danny holds 15 US patents, 11 world patents, and has 21 applications that are awaiting approval. Danny was awarded the Nickerson Service award from the Inter-Society Color Council in 1999, the National Printing Ink Manufacturers award for Technical Achievement in 2008, the Thomas Alva Edison award for innovation by the Research Council of New Jersey in 2008, the Robert F Reed Medal from the Printing Industries of America in 2013, the Mattiello Memorial award from the American Coatings Association in 2015, the Godlove Award for lifetime achievements in color technology from the Inter-Society Color Council in 2019, and the President’s Award from the Flexographic Technical Association in 2019. Danny retired from Sun Chemical Corporation in August 2021 after 21 years. Shortly thereafter, he and Phyllis moved to the Memphis area. Danny and Phyllis were blessed with three children. Their first child, a daughter named Amanda, was born in 1987. In 1991, Phyllis gave birth to twin sons, Brandon and Bryan. Danny had a strong love for the Lord and served faithfully as an elder at the Princeton Church of Christ in New Jersey for 21 years. Danny is survived by his wife of 46 years, Phyllis, and his children, daughter Amanda of Marion, Arkansas, son Brandon (Brooke) of Ewing, New Jersey, son Bryan (Kelly) of Canton, Michigan and his brother, David (Anita) of Boise, Idaho. Danny was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service is to be held at the Church of Christ at White Station, 1106 Colonial Road, Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday July 9, 2022. Visitation at 1:00 PM; Service at 2:00 PM and a fellowship meal following the service; everyone is invited.
